Gun Laws

Let me be very clear. I am NOT advocating that your guns be taken away from you. I own guns. My family owns guns. My dad was a hunter. I have friends who own assault rifles. They don’t need them, they just want them. They like to shoot. I would suggest they go to a gun range and rent one so they can have the thrill of shooting one. If you’re not in the military or a peace officer on the job, you don’t need one.

What I am advocating for, is changes to the gun laws in our country. Here’s why.
Times have changed. Do you remember when you took biology class in high school and you studied mice in cages, mazes, or boxes? When there were just a few critters, they got along fine. When too many mice were added, they became aggressive with each other, biting, maiming, killing each other. That’s where mankind is now. Our planet is finite. There are too many of us to maintain the cowboy culture we conquered the wild wild west with.
The 2nd Amendment was put in place in a time of muskets and single shot rifles. No one who wrote that amendment envisioned assault rifles or populations of millions crammed into one city.
People cry foul – that their “rights” are being taken away from them if you take their guns away. Well, I’m sorry. Their rights got taken away from them when someone put up a speed limit sign and they could no longer drive 80 miles per hour in a school zone, or a neighborhood with children playing on the streets. That was done for the safety of the children and no one worried about the driver’s right to speed, did they?
What’s the difference? Money. Republican Congressmen and women receive millions of dollars in campaign contributions from gun lobbyists – paid to them and their campaigns by the gun manufacturers who do not want ANY restrictions at all, not for mental illness, not for felons, not for amounts of weapons or ammo or size of clips. None. Nothing that would hurt their bottom line. Now they are smart and they don’t say it quite that way. They say they are protecting your rights. They say guns don’t kill people, people kill people. Sure. People with guns kill people. Take the gun out of that formula and see what you get.
Times have changed. The restriction against mentally ill people owning guns that was recently lifted, needs to be put back in place. How about mandatory locks that only the owners fingerprint can unlock? If the gun gets into the wrong hands, nobody gets hurt. There are some simple solutions out there, if we refuse to let money rule. Let’s put our children first.
