Are you looking for a career in which you can be happy, or negotiating the maze of care-giving, or trying to get over the loss of a loved one? How is it that we piece together the puzzle of life’s challenges?
Right now my studio floor is covered with newspaper articles, tapes, notes & journals encasing fifty years of my father’s investigative career. Dad wanted his stories in a book. I have never tackled anything remotely similar to this. How do I, someone who writes fiction and children’s lit, do his passion justice?
Dad was a meticulous Special Agent in the FBI, but in his last years when he recorded these stories, he left out some of the details, such as identifying the suspect or giving dates which makes researching very difficult to say the least. There is also the fact that I am not a historian nor a biographer. The thought of dropping the project has crossed my mind, but as I started talking to others, a compromise was suggested between his stories and my style of writing.
And isn’t that what life is all about? Finding the path that is right for us. I already know that my dad was proud of me, but he would be pleased beyond measure to know that I am trying to find a way to tell his stories. The key word being “trying.” That is all he ever asked.
So, here’s to the journey, to you finding your path through each challenge that comes along. Sometimes it means we change paths altogether, and that is okay too, as long as we keep trying, keep moving, leave the guilt behind, and pass some love around the table.
